Brain’s immune cells key to wiring the adolescent brain

Researchers at the Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience have discovered that microglia, the brain’s immune cells, play a key role in how the brain adapts to the changes in the frontal cortex during adolescence, which may transform how neurodevelopmental disorders are treated during this window and, possibly, into adulthood. Explore the research.

Meliora Weekend highlights for students

A special block of student and family tickets for “An Evening with Trevor Noah” on Saturday, September 20, will be released today, September 2, at noon. Tickets will go fast and are only available through the Meliora Weekend website. Before purchasing, check with your family to see if they’ve already secured tickets. Additional audiences will be invited to purchase tickets beginning Friday, September 5. Other highlights for students include:

  • Rochester Traditions Giveaway for the Eastman School of Music on Thursday, September 18, from 3 to 6 p.m. in Lowry Hall. Students in the School of Arts & Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences can attend on Friday, September 19, from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Wilson Quad
  • Meliora Village featuring food trucks, live music, lawn games, and more on Friday, September 19, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on Saturday, September 20, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wilson Quad

Education Abroad returnee welcome back celebration

Celebrate your adventures abroad at the Returnee Welcome Back Celebration on Thursday, September 4, at 4:30 p.m. in Havens Lounge, Wilson Commons. Share your stories, make new friends, or find your next global adventure. Study abroad returnees can RSVP here.

Benefits survey closes today

Today, September 2, is the final opportunity to complete the University’s benefits survey. Your feedback helps shape the long-term benefits strategy; you’ll also be entered in a drawing for a chance to win prizes including iPads, Beats earbuds, and more. Eligible employees can find the survey link in the August 12 email from the Office of Human Resources. An outside consulting firm is conducting the survey to ensure confidentiality.

National Emergency Preparedness Month events at the Medical Center

Throughout September, the Nursing Emergency Preparedness Committee will host a series of hands-on training sessions to strengthen readiness across the Medical Center. Each week will focus on a different preparedness skill, allowing staff to practice practical, real-world skills in a supportive learning environment. There will also be outside vendors and Medical Center departments focused on emergency preparedness and response in the Strong Memorial Hospital main lobby on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to noon. Translational science lecture on non-animal models for disease

This translational science grand rounds presentation will describe the rapidly evolving landscape of non-animal model adoption, highlight recent work from the Translational Center for Barrier Microphysiological Systems, and offer practical guidance for laboratories seeking to integrate tissue-on-chip and other human-relevant models into their research portfolios. Register to attend on Thursday, September 11, from noon to 1 p.m.

Talk with artist Mark Dion at MAG

Join contemporary American artist Mark Dion as he speaks on his work, which mimics historical or scientific displays, pointing to environmental degradation and the current global biodiversity crisis, as well as the broader subjective nature of truth. This free talk, part of the “Entering the Wunderkammer” series, takes place at the Memorial Art Gallery on Thursday, September 25, from 6 to 7 p.m. Find details here.
