Menopause can mess with your memory, and a new study from Medical Center researchers has identified four profiles of cognitive function that may help researchers understand why memory declines for some women during menopause. “If we understand what goes on cognitively for women during this time, we can help normalize the experience,” said Miriam Weber, an associate professor of neurology and of obstetrics and gynecology, who is the first author of the study.

“What’s interesting here is that they’ve created this, essentially, law that almost by design is going to benefit incumbents,” says David Primo, the Ani and Mark Gabrellian Professor and a professor of political science and business administration, and author of a book about campaign finance. “And so usually you don’t see something that’s so transparently anti-challenger. Usually, it’s at least couched in some sort of rhetoric about campaign finance. That’s what makes this a little bit unusual.”
Apply for fellowships that support future foreign service
The Pickering and Rangel Fellowships provide money for graduate school for students who want to enter the foreign service. The respective deadlines to apply are September 22 and 29. Interested students may contact the Fellowships Office at fellowships@rochester.edu with questions.
The 2021 KeyBank Rochester Fringe Festival is in urgent need of additional volunteers. The University is a sponsor of the annual festival, which takes place September 14 through 25. Volunteers also receive a T-shirt and qualify for one free ticket to a Fringe-curated show for every eight hours worked. Learn more and sign up here.
Eastman Community Music School open house
Eastman Community Music School is hosting an open house at 10 Gibbs St. from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 12. Musicians of all ages are invited to learn about the musical opportunities offered at the school. The fall semester begins on Wednesday, September 8. Many University faculty and staff are eligible for a 25 percent tuition waiver for themselves and their children through the Office of Total Rewards. Masks will be required at the open house.
In a video shared on the UR Medicine Facebook page, Medical Center employees share why they received the COVID-19 vaccine—some as recently as last week after overcoming initial hesitation—and urge others to do the same.
