The secret to a longer lifespan? Gene regulation holds a clue
What accounts for a longer lifespan? According to new research from Vera Gorbunova, the Doris Johns Cherry Professor in the Department of Biology; Andrei Seluanov, a professor of biology and medicine; and Jinlong Lu, a postdoctoral research associate in Gorbunova’s lab, a key piece of the puzzle lies in the mechanisms that regulate gene expression.

“Low booster rates among direct care staff will place vulnerable nursing residents at increased risk of COVID infection and, unfortunately, a number of these infections will result in adverse outcomes, including death,” says Brian McGarry, an assistant professor of medicine and of public health sciences. “While vaccines dramatically lower absolute risk, vaccinated nursing home residents are at the much higher relative risk of hospitalization or death if infected compared to the general population.”
