In an underground mine in South Dakota, researchers unravel mysteries of dark matter
Students and researchers from Rochester are part of a team of about 250 scientists from 35 institutions that has deployed the world’s most sensitive dark matter detector, which may profoundly expand our understanding of the universe. Frank Wolfs, a professor of physics and astronomy, is overseeing Rochester’s efforts in the project. Above, components used to assemble the experiment LUX-ZEPLIN—including digital electronics developed at Rochester—are transported down a shaft and installed in the nearly mile-deep research cavern at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota.

This is a student-led advancement for the transgender and non-binary communities that aligns with the priority of intrinsic inclusivity within Arts, Sciences & Engineering. Tickets cost $4 each and cancer survivors and their families are invited to participate in a parade on the field before the game. New MAG exhibit showcases South African bead art
“Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence,” a new exhibition at Memorial Art Gallery, showcases a new form of bead art, the ndwango (“cloth”), developed by a community of women living and working together in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Learn more about the exhibit, which runs July 17–October 23.
Wilmot Cancer Institute opened its 14th cancer center on July 11 at 875 Hard Road in Webster. The new building will provide multidisciplinary cancer care for patients, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, clinical trials, and other services.
Face masks are optional for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors indoors. Patient care areas, as well as University shuttles and transportation, continue to require masking. A full description of Medical Center masking requirements is available on the URMC Intranet (University network access required).
