Statement from University leadership about the protests in Iran
The following statement was shared by Jane Gatewood, vice provost for global engagement; Jeffrey Runner, dean of the College; and Melissa Sturge-Apple, vice provost and University dean of graduate education:
The violent suppression of protests in Iran decrying the death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody has focused the world’s attention on injustices and inequities in contemporary Iranian society. The fact that much of this suppression has been directed at university campuses in Iran has particular resonance with us here at the University of Rochester.
Women’s rights are human rights. Freedom of expression is a foundational tenet of universities around the world. We stand in solidarity with those in Iran and elsewhere who stand up for equity and speak out against injustice.
Hajim students thrive where STEM, humanities intersect
Three senior undergraduate students in the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences are being honored with the Wells Award, given each year to high-achieving Hajim students who also excel in a humanities field, as determined by the highest GPAs at the end of their junior year.
