Pediatric trauma team helps reduce radiation exposure in children

Computed tomography (CT) scans are important to get a precise diagnosis in specific situations, but carry extra risks and additional costs that are best avoided if other methods are possible. To prevent these risks, clinicians at the Pediatric Trauma Center at Golisano Children’s Hospital initiated one of the first large-scale hospital efforts that significantly reduced the number of unnecessary CT scans conducted on injured children, limiting exposure to harmful radiation and reducing healthcare costs with no negative effect on outcomes.

University awarded new three-year grant for biology, chemistry majors

The University has been awarded a three-year grant for the new Beckman Scholars Program, which provides undergraduates majoring in biology and chemistry the opportunity to conduct independent laboratory research under the mentorship of select Rochester faculty over a 15-month period. The program is administered by the Departments of Biology and Chemistry and will be guided by three core values: research excellence, mentorship, and inclusion. Two undergraduates will be selected each year, for three years, and each student will receive $21,000 in funding over 15 months in support of their research efforts. Students can apply by 5 p.m. EST on February 24. The Rochester faculty members who applied for and were awarded the grant are Shauna Paradine, an assistant professor of chemistry; Jennifer Brisson, a professor of biology; and Sina Ghaemmaghami, Mercer Brugler Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Department of Biology and the George Y. and Catherine H. Wu Professor in Chemistry. Rochester is one of 14 American institutions that will receive more than $2.1 million in total funding for 84 undergraduates.
