Vigil, carillon concert mark anniversary of September 11
The annual vigil marking the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, takes place on Monday, September 11, from 8:45 to 11:15 a.m. on the Eastman Quadrangle, River Campus. The University’s NROTC will hold a battalion-wide run on Tuesday, September 12. The Carillon Society hosts a memorial “creative listening” concert at 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 10.
Rochester alumni Brendan Dolan ’86, Jeremy Glick ’93, Aram Iskendarian ’82, Joan Hoadley Peterson ’69N, Jeffrey Smith ’87, ’88S (MBA), and Zhe (Zack) Zeng ’95, ’98S (MBA), were among the nearly 3,000 people who died during the attacks.
National Health Care Environmental Services and Housekeeping Week
National Healthcare Environmental Services and Housekeeping Week takes place September 10–16 and is an opportunity to show appreciation to the dedicated staff that provide a clean and healthy environment at all University, Medical Center, and UR Medicine facilities. Participating Environmental Services departments will celebrate staff contributions and efforts by hosting multiple activities which include games, drawings, mealtime events, and service award ceremonies. All University faculty and staff are encouraged to thank their area Environmental Services staff for performing their critical role each day.
A recent op-ed cowritten by Adam Frank, the Helen F. and Fred H. Gowen Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, suggests that we may need to rethink key features of the origin and development of the universe.
This fall, the Mindful University Project will be partnering with Shine Bright, a local yoga studio, to offer yoga classes for free every day of the week at the Goergen Athletic Center. All students and R Club members will also receive a free unlimited membership to Shine Bright to access their yoga and meditation classes. Writing workshop series for AS&E graduate students and postdocs
The Graduate Writing Project is hosting a writing workshop series for AS&E graduate students and postdocs that is continuing on September 14 and 28 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Join the group for some free food and writing support to kickstart your semester. Applications are now being accepted through September 25 for the 2024 Child Care Subsidy. The University launched the Child Care Subsidy Program to assist eligible faculty and staff with child care expenses by providing awards of up to $3,600 a year, depending on total household gross income, through the pre-tax Dependent Care FSA. Mindful Professor training program
The Mindful University Project is offering Mindful Professor training for teaching faculty and course instructors at the University this spring. The program is rooted in cutting-edge research and practices and aims to offer participants a variety of tools to access ways to return to calm, be present with themselves and others, utilize mindful leadership skills, enhance teaching effectiveness, and learn what actions they can take to support students’ well-being.
The Mindful Professor Training lasts three months and includes seven hour-long workshops and two one-hour mentorship coaching sessions. Find more information and register.
The Goergen Institute for Data Science hosts “Careers in Data Science” with Ziyu Song ’20, a software engineer with Apple. This virtual career talk will be held today, September 8, at 11 a.m. via Zoom.
Eastman Community Music School open house
Eastman Community Music School is hosting an in-person open house on Sunday, September 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Karen Rettner Community Center, located on the Eastman campus at 10 Gibbs Street. Talk to teachers, try new instruments, and learn about all the school’s offerings. Continuing and prospective students alike are welcome. Buddhist meditation group
Join the Buddhist meditation group via Zoom for weekly sessions on Mondays from 5 to 6 p.m. Each session includes two 30-minute drop-in sittings to fit tight schedules. Contact Kyle Trenshaw, assistant director for STEM education at the Learning Center, for more information or to be added to the email list. No prior meditation experience is necessary.
XR Research Expo
Mary Ann Mavrinac Studio X is putting a spotlight on extended reality (XR) research at Rochester on Friday, September 15, in its first-ever XR Research Expo. This is a great opportunity to learn from colleagues and identify opportunities to collaborate. For students, this is a chance to discover and cultivate future research opportunities. All attendees will be able to try a range of XR equipment, including headsets from Meta, Microsoft, and HTC. Opening remarks will begin at 1:30 p.m., followed by lightning talks and tabling sessions. Grant opportunities from the Institute for Music Leadership
The Institute for Music Leadership (IML) at the Eastman School of Music offers two grant opportunities for fall 2023. The IML Mentorship Grant provides matriculated Eastman School of Music students with opportunities to receive funding and mentorship to encourage new thinking and the development of innovative ideas in music. The Paul R. Judy Center (PRJC) for Innovation and Research Grant supports innovative projects and research that focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a prioritization of projects that advance antiracism work in the arts. The PRJC Grant is open to all US-based applicants in the fall but will maintain a focus on those in the Eastman community in the spring. Both grants have application deadlines of October 1, and February 1 next spring. Email all inquiries and requests for application support.
25th annual Health Care Compliance Conference
The 25th annual Health Care Compliance Conference, presented by the Medical Center’s Office of Integrity and Compliance, will address emerging compliance program developments and risks affecting health care providers throughout the region and nationally. Keynote speakers Giovanni Gallo and Nick Gallo, co-CEOs of Ethico, will discuss the culture of compliance in today’s highly regulated world. The hybrid conference takes place on Thursday, October 26. Annual Surgical Symposium
The 6th annual Surgical Symposium takes place Thursday, November 5, at the Hyatt Regency Rochester and provides regional healthcare practitioners in various clinical areas with the opportunity to gain practical, evidence-based knowledge to enhance their surgical practice.
