Researchers identify ‘sweet spot’ for safe surgery after heart attack

New research led by Laurent Glance, a professor of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, shows that delaying surgery for three to six months following the most common type of heart attack in patients 67 and older reduces the risk of complications.

Upcoming login changes to international student systems applications

On November 14, as part of the University initiative to migrate away from using NetID, the international student systems logins (including URCompass and Sunapsis) will change from NetID to Microsoft Entra ID accounts. The Entra accounts are based on the UR and URMC Active Directory (AD) accounts. For those with UR Active Directory accounts, the Entra username uses the format ADusername@ur.rochester.edu. For those with URMC AD accounts, the Entra username is the URMC email address, such as First_Last@urmc.rochester.edu. Read more about the change.


IN MEMORIAM

Flags will be lowered for Emmanuel Akowuah

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Thursday, November 14, for Emmanuel Akowuah, a professor emeritus in the Department of Medicine, who died on October 6. Akowuah joined the University faculty in 1980.

Bookstore pop-up

Stop by Hirst Lounge, Wilson Commons, on Friday, November 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a bookstore pop-up. Shop the styles and deals of the bookstore without leaving River Campus. Open to all students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Event on sleep and self-care

Join the UHS Health Promotion Office from noon to 2 p.m. on Monday, November 11, for a sleep and self-care event in the Welles-Brown Room, Rush Rhees Library. Learn about healthy sleep habits and incorporating yoga nidra into your life to lower stress and improve well-being. There will be some prizes, as well as tea and a yoga practice.

UHS town hall meeting

Join University Health Service leadership for its first town hall meeting on Thursday, November 14, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Gowen Room, Wilson Commons. Get updates on primary care, counseling, health promotion, and administration. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and share your concerns or new ideas. Registration is requested here.

Free STI testing clinic on November 18

Did you know that the most common symptom of a sexually transmitted infection is no symptoms at all? Sign up for an appointment at one of the UHS Health Promotion Office’s free testing clinics throughout the semester. Clinics are held on Mondays from 4 to 7 p.m. in partnership with Trillium Health. Open to all undergraduate and graduate students. The next clinic takes place on November 18.

Wellness on Demand vending machine

Do you need items such as emergency contraception, safer sex supplies, and COVID tests? Visit the Wellness on Demand vending machine in the University Health Service foyer. The items are available 24 hours a day. Brought to you by the UHS Health Promotion Office and Primary Care teams.

Workshop on the University’s computing environment for research

The Center for Integrated Research Computing will host a workshop for learning about the University’s computing environment for research on Friday, November 8, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the VISTA Collaboratory on the first floor of Carlson Library.

The morning sessions are targeted at new and beginning users, and the afternoon sessions will cover more in-depth topics and tools and applications available for the research community. First-Generation Day of Celebration

Celebrate first-generation students and the wider first-generation community at “First-Generation Day of Celebration” on Friday, November 8. The event, featuring a keynote address by Ruben Canedo, director of strategic equity initiatives at the University of California, Berkeley, honors the journey and accomplishments of first-generation students. Hosted in collaboration with the David T. Kearns Center for Leadership and Diversity, the First-Generation Student and Families Committee, and the Alumni Relations and Constituent Engagement’s First-Generation Network. The event takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Hawkins-Carlson Room, Rush Rhees Library.

Upcoming community dialogues

Looking for a space to share what’s on your mind or listen and connect with others? Whether it’s a topic weighing on your heart or something you feel the need to talk about, facilitated sessions from the Office of Equity and Inclusion’s Restorative Practices Team provide a forum where the conversations are shaped by you. All are welcome.

Opioid overdose prevention training

The Department of Psychiatry provides opioid overdose prevention training throughout the year. The free program provides skills for community members to recognize the signs of an overdose as well as how to respond and administer Narcan. Training takes place virtually every second Tuesday and last Thursday of the month. Register to attend the second Tuesday evening sessions. You can also register for the Tuesday or Thursday sessions by emailing Christina Collier or calling (585) 275-1829.
