Researchers developing a tool to conceal and anonymize voices instantly

A team of researchers including Zhiyao Duan, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, is developing a new system that will allow people to speak anonymously in real-time through computer-generated voices to help protect privacy and avoid censorship or retaliation.

Many women with epilepsy unaware of seizure meds’ risks to pregnancy

US News & World Report, December 10

“Many neurologists do not learn about birth control in their training, even though they know that anti-seizure medications may have some risks in pregnancy,” says Sarah Betstadt, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology. “We hope this study raises awareness for patients and encourages health care providers from neurology and reproductive health care to work together to ensure the best care for these patients.”

Orientation team information session

Join the Office of Orientation and New Student Programs today, December 11, at 5:30 p.m. in Havens Lounge, Wilson Commons, to learn more about applying to join the 2025–26 student orientation team. Open to undergraduate students in the School of Arts & Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, team positions (orientation leaderWelcome Week leader, and Welcome Week volunteer) are responsible for welcoming next year’s first-year, transfer, and exchange students to campus, as well as their families. Perks include on-campus summer housing (orientation leaders only) and early move-in for fall 2025. Time commitments and specific responsibilities vary by position; review the website for full details on each role.

Auditions for Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812

The International Theatre Program will hold auditions for the musical Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 on January 24 and 25. Find more information, including an audition schedule, here. Open to all students on the River Campus and at the Eastman School of Music. Academic credits are available for participation.

Register for spring Mindful Professor training

The Mindful University Project is calling on all faculty and course instructors to join the fifth cohort of the Mindful Professor training program, a professional development course to enhance your teaching, boost your well-being, and foster student success. Through this program built on cutting-edge research, you’ll learn tools to stay calm, be present, and lead with mindfulness. Participants receive a Mindful Professor sticker, notebook, certificate, and access to an exclusive community of Mindful Professors with gatherings and continuing education opportunities. Program sessions take place on select Mondays from 10 to 11 a.m. on the River Campus. Visit the Mindful Professor Training website for more information and to register.

VSP reminder

If you enrolled in VSP for your routine vision coverage (you would see Benefit Extras Before Tax on your paystub), don’t forget to take advantage of it before the end of the calendar year. You don’t need a card to utilize your benefits. At your eyecare appointment, tell them your VSP ID number, which is three zeros followed by your employee ID number. Warner School drop-in hours

Stop by the Warner School of Education and Human Development in LeChase Hall, Room 285, today between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. to meet with admissions advisors. Get help with your application, ask questions about graduate programs and scholarships, and more—no appointment is necessary. The Warner School accepts applications on a rolling basis. Apply by December 15 to start as early as summer 2025. Contact Warner’s admissions office with questions.

Kwanzaa celebration of Ujima at MAG

Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of the Memorial Art Gallery’s Kwanzaa Celebration of Ujima. Celebrated on the third day of Kwanzaa, Ujima is a principle that emphasizes the importance of collective work and responsibility within the community. Enjoy free museum admission and embrace music, art, culture, community, and more. The event takes place Saturday, December 28, from noon to 3:30 p.m.
