Introducing a private chatbot for the University community
The University has launched a private version of ChatGPT-4 exclusively for faculty, staff, and students. The advanced chatbot, available at chat.rochester.edu, is designed to help with a range of inquiries and tasks.
Key features include:
Enhanced support: Whether you need help with course information, campus resources, or general inquiries, the private AI assistant can help.
Privacy and security: Your conversations are completely private. The University ChatGPT-4 will not retain or learn from any contributing conversations.
Anytime accessibility: Available 24/7, the tool provides information whenever you need it.
Use of this AI system is subject to all University policies, including Academic Honesty, Research Integrity, IT, and Data Security.

Three Rochester faculty members receive nation’s highest honor for early-career investigators
The Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers has been awarded to Ehsan Hoque, a professor of computer science; William Renninger, an associate professor of optics and of physics and astronomy; and Petros Tzeferacos, an associate professor of physics and astronomy and a senior scientist at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics. The award is the highest honor bestowed by the US government for outstanding scientists and engineers early in their careers. Note: Details of Renninger’s award were added after the initial announcement of this award in Friday’s @Rochester.
Winterfest 2025 headliner and ticket information
Comedian Michael Che, known for his work on Saturday Night Live and his Netflix specials Michael Che Matters and Michael Che Shame the Devil, will headline the Winterfest stand-up comedy event on Saturday, February 1, at Kodak Hall, Eastman Theatre. The show begins at 8 p.m.; doors open at 7:15. Shuttles from Rush Rhees will start at 6 p.m.
Ticket sales start:
Today, January 21, at noon for University undergraduate students. Use your University email and code “25URWINTER” for $15 tickets. Undergraduate tickets require a valid University ID at the door.
Thursday, January 23, for staff and faculty. Purchase $25 tickets with code “25WINTERALL”.
Friday, January 24, for the general public. Get your tickets at the Eastman Box Office, online or in person.
Undergraduate students in the School of Arts & Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences must have a completed and approved 2024–25 individual travel waiver to participate in student organization activities more than 50 miles off campus. Eastman School of Music students who participate in these events with students from River Campus must also complete a waiver. Waivers must be submitted each academic year. Inaugural Career Exploration Summit
Kickstart your journey on Saturday, January 25, with the Career Exploration Summit—a conference-style event designed specifically for first- and second-year students. Over 25 University alumni are dedicating their time to return to campus to share their stories with you. You’ll learn firsthand from graduates who were once in your shoes—how they found their path, built valuable skills, and made the most of their time at Rochester. Lunch will be provided. Language Center open for spring semester
The Language Center is open to all Rochester students looking to immerse themselves in cultures and languages from around the world. Services include peer language tutoring for students enrolled in language courses, weekly conversation hours open to all, and a variety of multimedia and virtual reality resources to support language learning. The Language Center is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Explore Tools for Data Science
University employees and PhD candidates seeking a hands-on intro to widely-used tools for data science are invited to check out the first day of class for DSCC 401: Tools for Data Science on Wednesday, January 22, from 9 to 10:15 a.m. in Bausch and Lomb Hall, Room 109. Topics for the course include computational hardware and Linux, languages and packages for statistical analysis and visualization, parallel computing and Spark, libraries for machine learning and deep learning, databases including NoSQL, and cloud services.
Spring shuttle schedules are now available online to assist with your semester planning. The schedules take effect today, January 21. Daily yoga classes start today
Start the spring semester with yoga to find your inner peace as you establish new routines. LGBTQ Spring Social for students, faculty, and staff
The Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center hosts its annual LGBTQ Spring Social, featuring a drag show by Aggy Dune, on Wednesday, January 29, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons. This is a free event for undergraduate and graduate LGBTQ students from all schools to come together in community with LGBTQ faculty and staff. Enjoy sushi, rainbow lanyards, and pronoun pins. Registration is due by Sunday, January 26, for students and faculty and staff.
Warner School virtual information session for international applicants
Join a Warner School of Education and Human Development virtual information session for international applicants from 8 to 9 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21, to explore the variety of graduate program offerings, including applied behavior analysis, counseling, educational leadership, education policy, health professions education, higher education, human development, online teaching, program evaluation, and teaching. Department of Psychiatry Martin Luther King Jr. grand rounds lecture
