It’s Valentine’s Day, and love is in the (chilly) air. Here’s a selection of hearty research, endearing stories, and moving moments from across the University.

TODAY'S UPDATES

Yeltekin stepping down for GW post

Sevin Yeltekin has announced she will be stepping down as dean of the Simon Business School on June 30. Yeltekin, who has been with the University since 2020, is leaving to become the next dean of the George Washington University School of Business. More information about the search for the next dean of the Simon Business School and details on who will serve as Simon’s interim dean will be available soon.


IN MEMORIAM

Flags will be lowered for Michela Vega

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Thursday, February 20, for Michela Vega, an Emergency Department access representative at Strong Memorial Hospital, who died on January 21. Vega joined the University staff in 2023.


FOR STUDENTS

Undergraduate writing contest

The Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program’s annual  Undergraduate Writing  Contest provides an opportunity to recognize outstanding student writing. Monetary prizes will be given to the best submissions in five categories and to the best multimodal compositions and projects. The contest is open to undergraduate students in the School of Arts & Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences.

You may submit up to one paper or project per category. Entries may be work for a course you are taking this semester or work you completed during a previous semester. Submissions are due today, February 14, at 3 p.m. Email wsap@ur.rochester.edu with questions.

Application deadline extended for residential life student leader positions

Applications for the D’Lion and First-Year Fellow positions have been extended through February 15 for the 2025–26 academic year. Find more information here.

Schwartz Discover Grant application workshops

Are you writing your application for a Schwartz Discover Grant and seeking help before the March 2 deadline? Register below for workshops to help you in your application process.

  • Attend a session with the Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program for personalized feedback and tips on your personal statement or research statement. Sessions take place February 14, 4 to 6 p.m., or Monday, February 24, 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Attend the Ask an Alum workshop on Tuesday, February 18, in Feldman Ballroom. Drop in any time between 5 and 7 p.m. to meet one-on-one or in groups for personal coaching from Schwartz Discover Grant alumni.
  • Drop by the Office of Undergraduate Research in Dewey Hall, Room 4-209B, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, to read through the Schwartz Discover Grant Look Book. Read personal statements and research statements from prior winning applications.

Dependent child tuition application reminder

Is your dependent child attending the University for the spring 2025 semester? If you have not already done so, submit your dependent child tuition waiver application in myURHR Workday. Eligibility requirements and additional information can be found on the tuition benefits website.

Exhibit explores role of women in the water-cure movement

Edward G. Miner Library’s newest History of Medicine exhibit is now on display. Healing Waters explores the role of women in the water-cure movement and features materials from the Edward C. Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine. The History of Medicine Section is open on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Spring G. Milton Wing mathematics lectures

Richard Schwartz, Chancellor’s Professor of Mathematics at Brown University, will give the spring 2025 G. Milton Wing Lectures. Learn more about each lecture at the below links.
