University discontinuing contagion pay for COVID-19
Effective August 1, the University will discontinue the use of contagion pay for COVID-19 leave, consistent with the expiration of the New York State mandate. Employees who test positive or experience symptoms of COVID-19 should use paid time off or sick leave as appropriate to record their absences.
Anyone with symptoms of a respiratory virus—including COVID-19—should stay home and avoid contact with others. Employees should only return to work after they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours (without fever-reducing medication) and as overall symptoms improve. When returning to work, employees should follow their manager’s guidance based on their specific work location.

As the University celebrates its 175th year, we’re highlighting some of the notable people, events, and discoveries that have contributed to Rochester’s rich history. Today, we look back at the University’s centennial anniversary celebration in 1950.
As you might imagine, celebrating 100 years of the University in 1950 was a momentous occasion. A year-long slate of events included a student-organized conference on human rights, featuring former First Lady and keynote speaker Eleanor Roosevelt, then chairperson of the UN Commission on Human Rights, among others. A series of University lectures followed, with the theme “International Adjustment” covering social, economic, and political problems. And, a 96-page special edition, centennial-themed issue of Alumnae-Alumni Review (now Rochester Review) was published.
For Commencement, a full symphony orchestra was assembled from the Eastman School of Music and the Rochester Civic and Philharmonic orchestras, while an original score arranged by Howard Hanson, director of the Eastman School of Music, with a script by John Slater, emeritus professor of English, was performed at convocation ceremonies by the Eastman Symphony Orchestra and the Eastman School Chorus. Of particular interest, a cake in the shape of Rush Rhees Library—a gift from a local pastry chef—was served at a dinner preceding the ceremonies. The location? The Field House and the Palestra. In attendance? 3,000 people.
That anniversary year also marked the opening of a centennial exhibit at the Rochester Museum of Arts and Sciences with life-size wax figures dressed in campus styles of various periods. To close out the celebration, Rochester hosted an all-University open house week in November featuring speeches from notable University faculty and leadership. Later that week, a new centennial color motion picture about the University, A Century Toward Tomorrow, was screened for the first time. Access the film here—and marvel at how much the University has changed since then.
