University launches initiative to strengthen youth mental healthcare

A four-year collaboration between the School of Nursing and Warner School of Education and Human Development has received a federal grant to expand training and grow the workforce of mental health professionals in under-resourced communities.


IN MEMORIAM

Flags will be lowered for Gail Long

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, July 22, for Gail Long, a social worker at Strong Memorial Hospital, who died on June 30. Long joined the University staff in 2020.

Postoperative delirium and preventing brain risks linked to post-surgery confusion

A new Medical Center study reveals that postoperative delirium is more common than previously thought, and it’s more serious than many realize. Researchers link it to long-term health problems, including lasting cognitive decline.

Heather Lander, an associate professor of medicine and of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, and Annie Medina-Walpole, the Paul H. Fine Professorship in Medicine and director of the  Aging Institute, share how patients and caregivers can protect brain health before and after surgery.

Lunch session on nature-based opportunities for mental wellness

The next session of the Department of Psychiatry’s 2025 summer brown bag series features Sara McLaughlin, senior director of operations and PATH-certified therapeutic riding instructor at EquiCenter. Register to attend in person in the School of Nursing Auditorium (1W-304) or virtually via Zoom on July 16 at noon. CEUs and CMEs are available.

Summer kickball on the quad

Rally a group of friends for a game of classic kickball on Wilson Quad on Thursday, July 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. Open to all University students, faculty, and staff, and sponsored by Wilson Commons Student Activities. The rain location will be Spurrier Gym.

Kearns Summer Research Symposium

Attend the 33rd annual Kearns Summer Research Symposium on Wednesday, July 30, and Thursday, July 31. Hosted by the David T. Kearns Center for Leadership and Student Success, the symposium celebrates the achievements of this year’s summer research scholars. The symposium will conclude with a reception. Six from Rochester selected to inaugural UAA Hall of Fame class

The University Athletic Association has established the Richard A. Rasmussen Hall of Fame for the Division III athletic conference and has selected its first full class of inductees this summer.
