Fund Established in Tribute to Scarsdale Man's Life

July 26, 1995

The family of the late James A. Chin, Jr. has established an endowed fund at his alma mater, the University of Rochester, as a tribute to his life.

Each year, the fund will support the awarding of a prize, The James A. Chin, Jr. Memorial Award. The award will go to a senior who exemplifies honor and integrity, is involved in extracurricular activities, particularly community outreach, and who has overcome adversity in achieving his or her goals. The award will be given yearly and applied toward tuition.

Jim, the son of James and Barbara Chin of Scarsdale, and brother of Julie, died suddenly on March 4, 1995. A 1993 graduate of the University of Rochester, he was a student senator, a member of the Student Council Appropriations Committee, and was very active in his fraternity, Sigma Nu. He also was a recipient of the Fried Award for his character and contribution to the community.

He graduated from Scarsdale High School in 1989, where he was co-treasurer of the senior class and involved in many student activities. He was a co-founder of The Strand, a Scarsdale teen-age night club; a member of the Teen Advisory Council, and the high school Prom Committee. He also attended Boys State and was an officer of the St. Pius X Teen Club.

The Chin family welcomes gifts to this fund. Donors may send checks payable to the University of Rochester to Mary Jo Ferr, Fairbank Alumni House, University of Rochester, 685 Mt. Hope Avenue, Rochester, NY 14627
