Cartoonist Aaron McGruder, creator of “The Boondocks” comic strip, will speak at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, in Strong Auditorium on the University of Rochester’s River Campus.

“The Boondocks” offers commentary on such topics as race relations, interracial marriage, juvenile delinquency, and current events through the characters of Huey and Riley, two African-American inner-city youths who have moved to the suburbs. First published in the student newspaper at the University of Maryland, where McGruder earned a bachelor of arts degree in Afro-American studies, the comic strip is now carried by more than 350 newspapers.

McGruder is working on developing several television projects, including an animated version of “The Boondocks” for Fox television. He is the author of the graphic novel Birth of a Nation and has another one in the works titled Fight the Power.

Tickets to McGruder’s program go on sale Jan. 17. Admission for the general public is $10 and tickets will be sold at Borders Books Music Movies and Café, 1000 Hylan Dr., and also at the Common Market in Wilson Commons on the River Campus. Tickets are $5 for University of Rochester staff, faculty, and graduate students with ID and $3 for University of Rochester undergraduates with ID; tickets for members of the University community will be available only at the Common Market.

McGruder’s appearance is sponsored by the Outside Speakers Committee and Black Students’ Union and is a Black History Month event in the College. For more information, contact (585) 275-5911.
