Soy Unica Soy Latina Rally Celebrates Latina Empowerment

WHO: ¡Soy Única! ¡Soy Latina!is open to Rochester area Latinas ages 7-18 (children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult) and their families.

TIME, DATE, PLACE: 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, March 7, May Room, University of Rochester River Campus

WHAT: The University of Rochester partners with Latinas Unidas to provide a day of celebration and empowerment during the sixth annual, ¡Soy Única! ¡Soy Latina! Rally. Participants will attend workshops that encourage healthy life choices, hear about majors and career opportunities, and learn exercise tips from Zumba instructor Lilianna Crane.

Parents will learn the ins and outs of college access and financial aid from Joe Latimer, director of diversity enhancement at the College, and discuss ways to ensure computer Internet security while their children surf the Web.

The day ends with the runway fashion show featuring trendy new Quinceañera and prom dresses. Led by event madrina, or godmother, successful State Farm proprietor Jackie Ortiz, the fashion show includes a raffle where one lucky teen will win a dress donated from Jane Pantoja, owner of Jane's Fashion and Bridal.

PROGRAM TIMELINE:
9:00a.m. – Welcome (May Room, Wilson Commons)

Welcome from Madrina Jackie Ortiz, elected officials and Dean Jon Burdick
9:15a.m. – Zumba Demonstration (May Room, Wilson Commons)

The girls will get moving and learn zumba from instructor Lilanna Crane
10:00a.m. – Parent's Workshops (Morey Hall)

Workshops feature lectures on Financial Education and Internet Security
10:00a.m. – Girl's Workshops (Morey Hal)

Workshops feature information on healthy living and career opportunities.
1: 00p.m. – Quinceañera / Prom Fashion Show Finale (May Room, Wilson Commons)

PARKING: Visitors may park at the Library Lot, located behind Rush Rhees Library.
