The filmmaker and educator looks forward to a day when she can avoid thinking about race. “A look, a comment. You don’t know what someone means, and racial anxiety sets in. Every day, I think about race.”

The University of Rochester has received a $1 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to increase undergraduates’ engagement with the humanities. Titled “Humanities for Life,” the five-year initiative is designed to engage students early in their academic careers.

Alice Quillen and Andrew Jordan have been awarded prestigious Simons Foundation Faculty Fellowships to pursue their research in theoretical physics. "This is a great time to drop everything and go work on the galaxy!” says Quillen.

The European Geosciences Union awarded its 2017 Petrus Peregrinus Medal to John Tarduno, a professor of geophysics, in recognition of his research on the evolution of the early Earth’s magnetic field.

Steven Piantadosi, an assistant professor of brain and cognitive sciences, was recognized as one of this year's outstanding psychological scientists in the early stages of their post-PhD research career.

The University will resume regular operations and scheduled activities tomorrow, Thursday, March 16.

Tree Campus USA is a national program through the Arbor Day Foundation that honors colleges and universities that have a commitment to effective urban forest management and engaging staff and students in conservation goals.

Officials from the University’s International Services Office (ISO) continue to strongly recommend that students, scholars, and employees from the affected countries who plan to travel internationally speak with an ISO staff member before leaving the U.S.

The University’s anti-racism committee will host a series of discussions to coincide with the United Nations’ annual International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Members of the University community are encouraged to wear gray “We’re Better Than That” T-shirts on March 21.

Tuition for undergraduates in the College will increase 3.7 percent to $51,090 for the 2017-18 academic year. Room and board will increase 3.4 percent to $15,324. Tuition for the Eastman School of Music will also increase 3.7 percent to $51,440. Undergraduate financial aid will increase 4.3 % over the current year forecast to $138.1 million.

River Campus’ newest residence hall, which will overlook the Genesee River from its east side, will also bear its name. Scheduled to open this fall, Genesee Hall will feature housing for approximately 150 freshmen, as well as meeting rooms, a new locker room facility, and training rooms for athletic programs.

His seminal contributions to the field helped attract graduate students to the Laboratory for Laser Energetics. He died February 5, 2017, at age 92.
