University statement on OCR notification

We received a letter from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) that it will investigate a University of Rochester student’s complaint about the way that the university handled her charge of sexual assault. When OCR receives such a complaint, it undertakes a broader, comprehensive review of a university’s handling of sexual misconduct complaints for a period of years.

Danny Wegman elected University board chair-elect, four new trustees named at May meeting

The University Board of Trustees elected Rochester business and civic leader Danny Wegman as board chairman-elect at its May meeting, to begin a five-year term following the May 2016 Board meeting. Wegman, CEO of Rochester-based Wegmans Food Markets, Inc., has served as a University trustee for more than 15 years.

University to install new sculpture on River Campus

A new 12-foot tall sculpture will be installed in Jackson Court as part of an effort to bring public art to campus. Artist Sabri Gokmen’s CALYX, was selected from a pool of more than 120 submissions received from an international call for proposals.

University to introduce Institute for Performing Arts

The institute will serve as a center for performance programs on the River Campus, aiming to further inspire students with or without prior training or experience to explore a variety of aesthetic art forms and opportunities. The institute will strengthen the relationships among the College, the Eastman School of Music, and the Memorial Art Gallery.

Xerox employee honored by Public Safety for selfless action

On the evening of April 13, at the intersection of McLean Street and Wilson Boulevard on River Campus, Ocieka Bakou, a local Xerox employee, selflessly intervened to prevent a violent crime from progressing into a possible tragedy.

University announces 2015 commencement honorary degrees and award recipients

The University of Rochester will recognize the outstanding contributions of distinguished leaders and scholars by bestowing honorary degrees, the Eastman Medal, Hutchison Medals for exemplary service, and awards for scholarship and teaching. Deborah Bial, founder and president of the Posse Foundation, will receive an honorary doctor of humane letters degree and deliver the College’s commencement address on May 17.
