Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa invites for induction the most outstanding students at America’s leading colleges and universities. Membership is by invitation only, and students are selected by faculty members who are members of the society.

The awards, also known as “the Rockys,” are divided into Individual Leadership Awards and Student Organization and Programming Awards. Students are nominated by faculty, staff, and peers.

Andrea Clarke of the Center for Community Health is among the several outstanding staff members honored this year for their significant and longstanding contributions to the University and to the Rochester community.

For one week in July, Emmanuel Gweamee ’20 and Aime Laurent Twizerimana ’20 will visit the Liberian capital of Monrovia to teach voting-age young people with disabilities about their civic responsibilities, with the help of a Davis Projects for Peace grant worth $10,000.

He was among 24 nominees who were honored in a ceremony Wednesday afternoon in Schlegel Hall. Yamout was chosen by a committee of nomination readers who represented all University campuses.

The author of four volumes of poetry, Grotz joins 20 other current Rochester faculty who have received Guggenheim Fellowships, which are among the most coveted academic awards.

Daria Lynch ’18 (T5 ’19), a history major, and Christian Wooddell ’17, an anthropology major, will be heading overseas this summer as part of the U.S. State Department program.

The University of Rochester has received a $1 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to increase undergraduates’ engagement with the humanities. Titled “Humanities for Life,” the five-year initiative is designed to engage students early in their academic careers.
