Critical Language Scholarships

Diego Encinas ’23 will study Portuguese and Jason Hahn ’23 will study Russian as part of government immersion program.

John Cole ’19 will study Mandarin Chinese in Xi’an, China; Joy Nicholas ’19 will study Swahili in Arusha, Tanzania; and Jacqueline Tran ’18 will study Arabic in Amman, Jordan as part of the US State Department's scholarship program.

Daria Lynch ’18 (T5 ’19), a history major, and Christian Wooddell ’17, an anthropology major, will be heading overseas this summer as part of the U.S. State Department program.

Fatima Bawany ’16, Aaron Schaffer ’16, and Saralinda Schell ’19 have each won scholarships from the highly competitive State Department program for advanced language study overseas this summer.

This summer, six University of Rochester students will travel abroad through two nationally competitive scholarships, the Critical Language Scholarship and the DAAD-RISE Scholarship program. This year's scholarship recipients will study at universities in Russia and Germany.
