President Richard Feldman recently announced that he has engaged the support of the consulting firm DeEtta Jones and Associates to help guide key elements of the University’s equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts.

On the 50th anniversary of the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., the University will join others across the nation who will ring their bells in tribute.

Kevin Beckford talks about why diversity matters as he begins his new role as the University’s first senior director of staff diversity, equity, and inclusion. “I actually think it’s a work in progress,” he says. “I don’t think you ever achieve a plateau where you can say, ‘We’re there.’”

On this annual observance by the United Nations, We’re Better Than That—the University’s anti-racism committee comprised of students, faculty, and staff—will sponsor a panel discussion and invite members of the community to sign a pledge to fight racism.

The newly formed Commission on Women and Gender Equity in Academia, chaired by associate professor of biomedical engineering Amy Lerner, left, and medical student Antoinette Esce ’15 has agreed to recommendations for clearer policies related to such issues as sexual harassment and intimate relationships, but is calling for further action to address what they say are more central issues of gender inequity.

March 8 is International Women’s Day, a day marked by rallies and celebrations around the globe. The University’s Commission on Women and Gender Equity in Academia will host a panel discussion with local activists promoting gender equity.

Marty Guenther has been there since the beginning, watching the Department of Computer Science grow and spearheading programs that support women students and connect all students to the increasingly global tech community.

Only 3 percent of all books published in the United States are translated from other languages, and only 29 percent of those are by women authors. Rochester is home to several projects aimed at addressing this.

Molly Murdock, an advocate for gender equity in music performance and scholarship, and Jonathan Wetherbee, cochair of the University’s Pride Alliance, have each received the 2018 Presidential Diversity Award.

Olivares will report directly to the dean of the Arts, Sciences & Engineering faculty. The move elevates the recognition and consideration of the importance of diversity issues within the Deans’ Office.
