Meet the Host: Megan Bennett-Spears
As Associate Director of International Partnerships, Megan Bennett-Spears helps coordinate international delegation visits and build relationships that can lead to long-term collaboration. We asked Megan what makes these visits successful, what visitors notice about the University of Rochester, and why hosting international partners matters.
What makes a successful delegation visit?
A successful delegation visit is about creating meaningful connections. The agenda matters, but what makes the biggest impact is bringing together the right people, encouraging open dialogue, and helping visitors experience both our organization and our community in an authentic way.
What surprises visitors about Rochester?
The beauty of the URochester campus is often the first thing that stands out. Visitors frequently comment on the architecture, green spaces, and overall campus environment.
Many are also surprised by how much Rochester, NY has to offer. They may expect a smaller-city experience, but quickly discover a vibrant innovation ecosystem, world-class education and healthcare institutions, and a highly collaborative culture. Visitors are especially impressed by how effectively our campus works across disciplines to tackle complex challenges.

What’s one memorable moment from hosting?
One particularly memorable visit was hosting the President of the University of Turku in Finland in spring 2025. As our first formal engagement with a Finnish institution, it marked an exciting milestone for the University of Rochester.
The visit culminated in a signing ceremony and dinner at President Mangelsdorf’s residence, bringing together stakeholders from across URochester. What made the experience especially meaningful was the opportunity for conversations to develop naturally over the course of the evening.
Rather than a brief series of campus meetings, the visit allowed colleagues to connect on a more personal level, identify shared priorities, and explore opportunities for future collaboration. It was a great example of how meaningful partnerships often begin through genuine dialogue and shared curiosity.

Global engagement is ultimately about connecting the right people at the right time. Delegation visits help build trust, which is the foundation of any successful and sustainable partnership.
