Welcome to the University of Rochester research community!
- Where do I go to get started with human subject research?
The IRB (Institutional Review Board) at the University of Rochester is also known as the RSRB (Research Subjects Review Board), IRB and RSRB are often used interchangeably. The RSRB is part of the Office for Human Subject Protection. https://www.rochester.edu/ohsp/

Will you accept my CITI training from my old institution?
No, you will need to complete the specific modules required by the University of Rochester. For information on how to access CITI and affiliate your account with the University of Rochester, please see the OHSP website: https://www.rochester.edu/ohsp/training/required-human-subject-protection-training/

What about my research at my old institution?
Once you become faculty, staff, or a student at University of Rochester, the IRB approval you had at your prior institution no longer covers your research activities. In order to continue conducting human subject research activities or procedures, you must open up the research with the IRB at URochester.
For Exempt research, you must submit a new study application at University of Rochester.
For non-exempt research (minimal risk or greater than minimal risk), you will either need to submit or it may be appropriate to proceed with a single IRB review process. OHSP will make the determination of how to proceed based upon any funding, federal oversight, and specific research procedures. Submit a Reliance Consultation Request to start the conversation.

I am bringing data with me from my previous institution. Do I need to do anything at URochester?
Make sure you have any data transfer agreements in place if you intend to bring data with you from your prior institution. Technically, even if you are the PI, the data belongs to the institution, and you are not allowed to bring it to your new institution without a data transfer agreement. Often, you should follow the data transfer policies of the original institution; however, at URochester, you will work with the Agreements team in ORPA (Office of Research and Project Administration). Contact the Agreements team to get started.

How do I submit an IRB application?
University of Rochester uses the Click IRB electronic submission system. See the OHSP website for information, policies, and templates. Additional information is located in the Getting Started Guide.
-
How do I get a login for the IRB system?
An account will be created automatically for you in the Click IRB system once you have completed the required CITI modules. It is important to ensure you affiliated your CITI account with University of Rochester and added your URochester email address to your institutional profile. Your account should be available the day after you complete the training. Your Click IRB login will be your standard URochester single sign-on login information.
-
How long will it take for my study to get reviewed?
Several factors impact how long it will take for your application to be reviewed. Applications are reviewed in the order in which they are received, so the amount of submissions at any given time have an impact on timelines. The consistency and completeness of the application and the number of revisions that are required will also impact the review time.
An application should be submitted several months prior to when the research is expected to begin to ensure sufficient time for review and approval. Information about recent changes to the review process can be found in the August OHSP Newsletter.
