English Proficiency Evaluation

Visiting Students

All incoming visiting students whose first language is not English are required to provide proof of English proficiency prior to arrival. The evaluation is submitted as part of the Global Visitor Program. Immigration documents will not be processed without the completed evaluation. Department hosts conduct and submit the English Proficiency Evaluation Form to meet this requirement.

Proof of English proficiency include:

  • Interview
  • Standardized English Language Test
  • Study at English-speaking Institution
  • English Language School
  • Native English Speaker

This requirement assures that incoming students have the ability to speak and understand verbal English, as well as the ability to read, write and comprehend written English, to be able to conduct their program successfully and function on a day-to-day basis.

Visiting Scholars

J-1 regulations require all visiting scholars to have the ability to speak and understand verbal English, as well as the ability to read, write and comprehend written English, to be able to conduct their J-1 program successfully and function on a day-to-day basis. Department hosts must complete ISO’s J-1 English Assessment Form. For more information on the requirement, visit the ISO website.
