Relatives of Fort Hood Shooting Work for Peace
WHO: Nader Hasan and Kerry Cahill, relatives of those involved in the Fort Hood, Texas shooting, discuss their efforts to turn personal pain into work for peace.
TIME, DATE, PLACE: 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Monday, March 11, at the Rochester Area Mennonite Fellowship (111 Hillside Avenue).
WHAT: For Nader Hasan and Kerry Cahill, the events surrounding the Fort Hood army base shooting impacted their lives in different ways. Hasan is the cousin of Nidal Hasan, the accused shooter, while Cahill is the youngest daughter of Michael Cahill CWII (ret.), one of the 13 killed at Fort Hood.
Today, they work together through the Nawal Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to uniting and empowering Americans against violent extremism through education and collaboration. Hasan initiated the Foundation as a platform for Muslim-Americans to speak out against violence in the name of Islam.
On Monday, March 11, Hasan and Cahill will share how they are work against violent extremism through education, inclusion and collaboration. The conversation, which is a part of A Season for Nonviolence, is sponsored by the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence at the University of Rochester.
