As the 2018–19 academic year inches closer, we can’t wait to be back and busy with all of you at our home beside the Genesee.

We’re excited to welcome the Class of 2022 to our community this fall! We can’t wait for you to discover and enjoy all that this University has to offer—be that the myriad of academic and nonacademic resources or the esteemed faculty we’re lucky to have. While you’ve undoubtedly chosen our University to pursue academic excellence, we urge you to get involved in the multitude of activities and organizations our college has to offer outside of the classroom. We encourage you to use your time at this institution to venture into new and unfamiliar territories, discover your passions, and broaden your outlook on the world.

This year’s communal principle is Responsibility. In the spirit of creating a stronger and more inclusive community on our campuses, we encourage you to act responsibly in expressing your ideas and conducting your actions by being mindful of those around you. We hope that encouraging important, open dialogues among students with a variety of backgrounds and perspectives will help our community grow; but in doing so, it is our responsibility to be respectful of all those around us, even when we may not agree with them.

We can’t put into words how excited we are to serve as your SA president and vice president. Feel free to send us an email, visit us in the Ruth Merrill Center in Wilson Commons, come to Senate meetings on Monday nights, or schedule a lunch with us at sa.rochester.edu if you have any questions or concerns or if you just want to chat.

We hope you have a lovely summer. See you soon!

On behalf of the Eastman Students’ Association, hello and welcome to the University of Rochester and the Eastman School of Music! We hope your summers have been productive, and that you’re excited to continue—or for some of you, begin—your careers here at Eastman and at the University. There’s a lot in store for you, and we can’t wait to begin another year.

Here at Eastman, we hope you take the time to introduce yourself to your professors and your fellow students, both new and old. Every class that walks through Eastman’s doors for the first time brings bright new ideas, fresh perspectives, and challenge- seeking attitudes, all of which have a home here. We encourage you to follow that drive wherever you may be, making the most out of every opportunity, whether that be in your lessons, in your ensembles, or while you explore both the University’s River Campus and the greater Rochester area (both of which we highly recommend you visit during your orientation!).

We’d like to take a moment to explain who we are and what we do. We are the Eastman Students’ Association; we are elected to represent the student body of the Eastman School of Music on a whole myriad of topics. We regulate budgets, oversee specific events, resolve issues of policy, and do our best to represent the diverse population of the University and of the Eastman School of Music. We are the first resource you have when it comes to voicing both concern and praise, and all constructive feedback is welcome. We have weekly meetings on the Eastman Campus, and you can reach out to any one of our members at any time.

We can’t wait to see you all and hope we get a chance to interact with you over the orientation days! Safe travels and have a happy summer!
