Q. I recently added my domestic partner to my health insurance and the taxes on my paycheck have increased significantly, can you tell me why?

A. A domestic partner is not considered a spouse under federal law. As a result, you pay income tax and FICA tax on the portion of the insurance premium that the U of R contributes to your domestic partner’s coverage.
