Farmers Markets Take Root
In the neighborhoods surrounding the University of Rochester, a movement to support locally produced foods and sustainable agriculture practices has taken root in the form of several new farmers markets, offering everything from grass-fed meats to greens and beets, right on the University's doorstep.
One of the newest markets, the Westside Farmers Market, will offer vegetables, fruit, meats, and other locally produced foods less than one mile from the University's River Campus, in the parking lot of St. Monica's Church. The neighborhood-based farmers' market hopes to serve both neighborhood residents and the University community alike with healthy, affordable food options as well as live entertainment and a vibrant setting.
The Westside market is modeled on the success of the South Wedge Farmers Market, now starting its second year in the Alexander Street parking lot at the corner of South Clinton Ave. Vendors at the South Wedge market offer farm-fresh produce; organic pastas and baked goods; locally produced wines, meats, and eggs; plus a variety of perennials, shrubs, and hanging baskets for the garden.
For weekend shoppers, the new Brighton Farmers Market is now open on Sunday mornings in the parking lot of Brighton High School. In addition to locally grown products, the Brighton market plans a variety of family-friendly events and entertainment.
