Center of Excellence in Data Science
A collaboration of higher education and business to bolster the New York State economy.
In 2014, New York State established the Center of Excellence (CoE) in Data Science at the University of Rochester. The CoE is dedicated to supporting businesses in New York through the application of data science methods and tools that solve challenges and deliver critical insights. It is funded by the New York State Department of Economic Development’s Division of Science, Technology, and Innovation (NYSTAR) and housed in the Goergen Institute for Data Science at the University of Rochester. The NYSTAR CoE program helps drive regional and statewide economic development by supporting basic research, training, and technology development. Over the last three years, our center has generated a direct economic impact of around $110M and created and retained at least 66 jobs.
The Center’s mission to advance the application of data science in New York State includes several strategic objectives:
The Center helps to increase the pool of well-trained data scientists by providing undergraduate and graduate students with experiential learning opportunities in partnership with industry.
The Center encourages public/private data science initiatives involving industry and faculty from the Goergen Institute for Data Science at the University of Rochester and other New York State institutions with the goal of creating economic impact based on collaborative research in data science.
The Center supports the development and execution of public policies and programs to improve the health and welfare of New York State residents.
The Center shares world-class data science expertise and computational technology with its partners in industry, government, and academia.
