Including more females in cardiac device trials benefits all patients

A recent cardiac device trial led by Valentina Kutyifa, a professor of medicine, enrolled an unprecedented 48 percent females—and revealed that males were twice as likely to die or experience heart rhythm issues within a year of receiving an implantable cardiac defibrillator. Read more on how improving the enrollment of females in such trials can better guide care for all patients.

Fall graduate student teaching workshops

These Teaching Center workshops are for all graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at the University. “How Teaching Makes You a Better Researcher” is September 12, and “Active Learning Strategies for Graduate TAs” is October 10. Both are offered via Zoom. Learn more and register here.

Open to all University instructors, faculty, and staff, these workshops are designed to provide practical strategies and ready-to-implement tools. The workshops are held on Zoom on Thursdays, from 11 a.m. to noon, and on Fridays from noon to 1 p.m. Register here.

What are HIIT, FITT, AMRAP, and DOMS? Learn about those acronyms and more during Well-U’s Fitness 101: Get Started program. Virtual sessions start on Friday, September 5, at noon. Complete the program to earn a $100 incentive and walk into the gym with confidence and knowledge.  Register here.

On-site retirement planning sessions

The University now offers MMA Prosper Wise, a retirement planning tool that adds to the financial resources available through the University retirement program. This fall, a financial coach will visit University locations to offer one-on-one sessions, providing personalized support for your retirement goals. Register for a session at Corporate Woods, the Medical Center, or the River Campus.

Eastman’s fall Faculty Artist Series schedule

The Eastman School of Music’s fall Faculty Artist Series features an exciting lineup of performances in Kilbourn Hall and Hatch Recital Hall, featuring internationally acclaimed faculty members. Tickets are $10 for general admission and free with a University ID.

Plutzik Reading Series kicks off season with Catherine Barnett

For more than six decades, the Plutzik Reading Series has offered students and the community the opportunity to hear from acclaimed and emerging authors and poets from around the globe for free. This year’s series begins with poet Catherine Barnett, who will read selections from her four collections of poetry at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16, in the Interfaith Chapel sanctuary, on the University’s River Campus. Copies of her books will be available for purchase. Learn more here.

Daily yoga classes from the Mindful University Project

The Mindful University Project offers daily yoga classes to reset, recharge, and find balance. All classes are held in the Leibner-Cooper Room, Goergen Athletic Center. Yoga mats and other props are available to borrow. Classes are open to all full-time students; part-time students, faculty, and staff can attend by signing up as an R-Club member for $23 per month.⁠ Check the calendar and register here.
