Simon Business School professor appointed chief economist of Amazon Web Services
Ronald Goettler, the James N. Doyle, Sr. Professor of Entrepreneurship and senior associate dean for faculty and research at Simon Business School, will be on an academic leave beginning August 29 to be chief economist at Amazon Web Services. In his new role, Goettler will lead economists and data scientists to help units throughout Amazon Web Services identify and pursue market opportunities and operational efficiencies. He will be succeeded as senior associate dean by Jim Brickley, the Gleason Professor of Business Administration, who brings extensive research, teaching, and administrative experience to the position.
New appointments in the Office of the Provost
Provost David Figlio recently announced two new appointments that will help coordinate the academic initiatives of the University of Rochester and support the daily operations of the Office of the Provost.
Jim Ver Steeg ’21 (PhD) has been named deputy to the provost, with responsibilities that include coordinating academic initiatives across the institution and assisting in the successful management and implementation of the University’s strategic plan. He will also direct strategic communications on behalf of the provost and will prepare research, reports, and other materials related to the University’s academic programs and initiatives. Prior to his role as deputy, Ver Steeg served as assistant vice president for communications in the Office of the Provost. “I am excited to work with Jim in this new capacity,” Figlio says. “I have been impressed by his strategic mind and his capacity for proactively identifying issues and priorities that are important to the University. I’m honored to have him as my deputy.”
Gigi DeMita-Benway, who previously served as executive assistant to the provost, has been appointed executive director of provost operations. In her new role, DeMita-Benway will oversee the daily operations of the Office of the Provost and provide executive support for a wide range of academic and operational initiatives. In addition, she will represent the provost in new systems implementation, including the Faculty Information System and the Human Resources Workday project. “In my short time as provost, I have come to rely on Gigi for her support and expert counsel on a range of projects,” Figlio says. “In this new role, she will be responsible for a broader range of operations and will help ensure that the provost’s office runs efficiently and smoothly for the entire University community.”

In conjunction with National Eye Exam Month, University Facilities and Services will be collecting eyeglasses throughout August to be recycled. Bruster's Ice Cream fundraiser at Medical Center next week
