Realizing the power of genomics through data science
Working alongside Rochester faculty mentors, Alejandro Cruz Setzekorn—a data science master’s student—analyzes how turning genes on and off can impact neurodegenerative diseases. Cruz is part of the first cohort of Genomic Intensive Data Science Research, Education, and Mentorship fellows. Partially funded by the National Institutes for Health, the program provides full-tuition scholarships to students on the genomics track, guarantees them internships, and connects them with mentors.

University reaccredited by Middle States Commission on Higher Education
In April 2024, the Middle States Self-Study team visited campus to conduct their review following the submission of the University’s self-study documents. The reaccreditation process dovetailed with the University’s strategic planning process, and both offered the opportunity for the institution to reflect on its successes and challenges. After a stellar review, the University has been officially reaccredited for the next eight years. University leadership thanks the steering committee, everyone who contributed to the self-study and the reaccreditation process, and the visiting team for the collegial advice offered, much of which is already embodied in the goals and objectives within the University’s strategic plan.
Gift establishes new distinguished professorship at the Institute of Optics
Bill Krupke, a physicist, laser scientist, technology entrepreneur, and a former program director at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, has established the William F. Krupke Distinguished Professorship in Optics at the University. Krupke’s generous $800,000 gift will be matched with $1.2 million from the Wyant Challenge, established in 2022 by the late trustee emeritus James Wyant ’69 (PhD) and his wife, Tammy, to create 10 endowed professorships at the Institute of Optics.
AlertUR test set for September 5
The fall semester test of AlertUR will be on Thursday, September 5, at 6 p.m. AlertUR is the emergency notification system for the University, including the Medical Center. In the event of an emergency, alerts are sent by voice, text, and email message. The purpose of the test is to activate the AlertUR system and check that you can be reached immediately. Before the September 5 test, students and employees should review their contact information and add a cell phone number if one is not listed or is not current; sign in with your Active Directory ID and password. Employees with an Active Directory ID who do not have a University email address may enter a personal email or phone number to receive emergency alerts. The September 5 test will not disrupt scheduled activities. Find more information on AlertUR here.
Learn how to get involved on campus by visiting the fall Activities Fair on Friday, August 30, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on the Wilson Quad. The fair includes more than 250 student organizations and features demonstrations and performances. The rain location will be in the Zornow Center in the Goergen Athletic Center. Sponsored by Wilson Common Student Activities and the Department of Athletics and Recreation.
