Research confirms value of knowing the whole person in geriatric oncology

Two new studies featuring Wilmot Cancer Institute researchers highlight how optimal treatment of older patients with cancer improves clinical care.

AlertUR test today at 6 p.m.

The fall semester test of AlertUR will occur today, September 5, at 6 p.m. AlertUR is the University’s emergency notification system, inclusive of the Medical Center. In the event of an emergency, alerts are sent by voice, text, and email message. The purpose of the twice-a-year test is to activate the AlertUR system and check that you can be reached immediately. IN MEMORIAM

Flags will be lowered for Irene Jingles

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Thursday, September 12, for Irene Jingles, a patient care technician in the Neuromuscular Division of the Department of Neurology, who died on August 2. Jingles joined the University staff in 1968.

Developing US job and internship search strategy for international students

Join the Greene Center in the Gowen Room, Wilson Commons, today, September 5, at 2 p.m. for the first of a three-part series designed specifically for international students who are looking to navigate the internship and job market in the United States. Session topics include what services the Greene Center has to offer, how to build competencies while at Rochester, how to prepare for internship and job searches along with US work culture and norms, and what to know about your visa and work authorization status. Tutoring services from the Writing and Speaking Center

The Writing and Speaking Center will offer its full range of tutoring services for School of Arts & Sciences and Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences undergraduate and graduate students for the fall semester. Find opening datesmake an appointment, or learn more about tutoring and writing groups on the Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program website. Instructors can also submit a request for a writing consultant to visit their class and perform a short presentation (about 10-15 minutes) explaining the center’s services, including both tutoring and undergraduate writing groups. Email the Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program with questions.

Meeting of Medical Center Latino faculty

Since 2022, Latino faculty members at the Medical Center have come together to get to know each other and the work that they do. Sponsored by the Office of Equity and Inclusion, the next meeting will be held on Thursday, September 12, at 5 p.m. in the Saunders Research Building atrium. ‘Drop-In Fridays’ are back at Mary Ann Mavrinac Studio X

Head to Mary Ann Mavrinac Studio X on select Fridays from 3 to 4 p.m. to experience hand-picked virtual reality applications including exciting games, creative art tools, and educational experiences. Friday, September 6, kicks off with Virtual Speech, an interactive tool designed to help you master public speaking. Bring a friend and dive into the world of VR. Can’t make it this time? Drop-In Fridays are a recurring event.

Calming U classes

Nurture your inner seed of mindfulness every Friday starting in September with the Mindful University Project’s Calming U class. The four-week course, tailored to University students, helps heighten your self-awareness, find emotional resilience through guided meditation, and offers introspective exercises and meaningful discussions.

Sessions start on the following dates and run for four weeks.

  • September 13 at 10:30 a.m. on Zoom
  • September 30 at 7:15 p.m. in Genesee Hall, Room 309

Register today to save your spot. Open to all University students, staff, and faculty. Students who attend all sessions will be able to receive a giveaway of their choosing: The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook, a meditation cushion, or a yoga mat.

Fenno Award ceremony, reception

The 2024 Richard F. Fenno Jr. Award for Political Inquiry will be presented to Frances Lee, a professor of politics and public affairs at Princeton University, on Thursday, September 19. The award ceremony and lecture take place at 4 p.m. followed by a reception at 5 p.m. in the Eisenberg Rotunda,
Schlegel Hall. Space is limited; register in advance to attend.

Fifth annual UR Medicine Cardiac Care Collaborative

The fifth annual UR Medicine Cardiac Care Collaborative ensures that the complexities of modern cardiology are addressed comprehensively, aiming to improve patient care through shared knowledge and interdisciplinary teamwork.
