TODAY'S UPDATES

Weather station horn test set for December 20 at 2 p.m.

The University recently installed a remote weather monitoring station on Towers Athletic Field in the Brian F. Prince Athletic Complex to offer real-time monitoring for severe weather to ensure preparedness at outdoor campus events, camps, and activities. In addition to collecting weather data, the weather station provides real-time lightning detection and tornado warnings through an audible horn—with a half-mile radius of coverage—and visual lights indicating an imminent weather threat.

To ensure the proper operation of the weather horn and visual warning systems, a test will be conducted on December 20 at 2 p.m. The horn will sound for about 10 seconds to test the lightning alarm and then again for 30 seconds to test the tornado alarm. University community members do not need to take any action as part of the test. Find more information on the new weather station.

SECURITY TIP

12 scams to look for this holiday season

University IT shares the Better Business Bureau’s “Naughty List of Scams” for this holiday season. Remember, you can avoid most scams by exercising caution when it comes to links, too-good-to-be-true social media ads, and suspicious emails or texts. Avoid any website that doesn’t show a lock in its URL field, as this indicates an unsafe website.

Office seating safety guidelines

Stay comfortable and supported throughout the workday by ensuring your chair is used correctly and maintained. Office chairs or stools with wheels can contribute to falls, especially on smooth or uneven surfaces. Exercise caution when rising, sitting, or reaching from a rolling chair or stool, and ensure that your work area is free from unnecessary cords and clutter. Maintaining proper posture and selecting seats with the right wheels for your flooring type (soft rubber or polyurethane wheels are best for hard surfaces, while hard wheels made of nylon and metal are best for carpeted areas) can also reduce injury risk. Find additional information on chair safety and the ergonomic services available through the Office of Environmental Health and Safety.
