Elaine Sia named senior vice provost for academic excellence
Elaine Sia, a professor of biology and the associate dean of academic affairs for the School of Arts & Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, has been appointed the inaugural senior vice provost for academic excellence, effective January 1. In this new role, Sia will be responsible for advancing the University’s academic mission by working closely with faculty, deans, and other senior leadership to strengthen the quality and impact of the University’s academic programs, research, and student success initiatives.

The holiday season is a popular time to receive new mobile devices. If you get a new phone or tablet, you will need to enroll in Duo to access needed University resources. Learn how to set up Duo on your new device. If you are off campus and not on the University network, you will need to contact the University IT Help Desk at (585) 275-2000 or the ISD Help Desk at (585) 275-3200 for assistance. Note that if you plan to sell, donate, or dispose of your former device, you’ll need to defer to Apple’s or Google’s instructions to ensure you reset the device properly.

Blackboard Ultra workshops and support resources for spring courses
Spring courses start in two weeks and many schools are moving to Blackboard Ultra. If you have not already started working in your new course shell, resources are available to help you get ready. Learn more about a three-part workshop series offered in January, with the first sessions beginning on January 7; 1-1 consultations with an instructional designer or technologist; a self-paced course; and drop-in office hours. There are also pre-made videos available to help you with the tasks needed to build your course.
Enroll in Well-U’s Manage Your Weight program to find your healthiest body weight and focus on your well-being in the new year. Get expert support and find camaraderie in shared goals with other University employees. Sign up for sessions starting Thursday, January 9, at noon.
Learn how to keep calm and carry on

EAP Supervisor Series
The spring UR Medicine EAP Supervisor Series starts with the virtual session, “Using EAP in Supervision,” on Wednesday, January 15, at noon. This session will provide all managers with an overview of EAP and help improve their ability to recognize employees with personal problems that adversely affect their performance. Register here.
This workshop will introduce ways to engage in open, respectful conversations that foster transparency and authentic relationships. Attend from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 7, at the School of Medicine and Dentistry or Thursday, January 16, at Rush Rhees Library. Screen Nam June Paik: Moon Is the Oldest TV at MAG
Head to the Memorial Art Gallery on Thursday, January 9, for the film Nam June Paik: Moon Is the Oldest TV alongside an exhibition of Paik’s work, on display through May 4. Register for HSM 465: Health Care Data Visualization and Analytics by January 7
Simon Business School and the UR Medicine Quality Institute are partnering to offer HSM 465: Health Care Data Visualization and Analytics designed for patient care providers and non-clinical staff. Topics include data literacy, pivot tables, and choosing key process indicators. Credit from the course will transfer to Simon’s MS in Medical Management program.
