Prestigious Honor
Being selected as the student commencement speaker is a prestigious honor, giving the student a platform to inspire peers, faculty, and the broader University community.
Nomination Process
Eligibility
Graduates from any undergraduate degree program at the University are eligible for nomination. Nominees must have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, service, and a commitment to our Meliora Values. Nominees should possess strong public speaking skills and the ability to convey a meaningful, inclusive message to the entire undergraduate community.
How to Nominate
Nominations can be submitted by any University of Rochester community member through our online nomination form.
Self-nominations are allowed.
Important dates:
- Nominations are due January 8, 2025
- Application submission is due January 27, 2025
Nominated Students

Application Process
After nomination, eligible students will be invited to formally apply. The application includes:
- Statement of interest: Why the nominee should be considered for this honor.
- Speech draft: A preliminary version of their proposed commencement speech.
- Speech video: A video recording of the nominee delivering their speech.

Selection Process
The selection of the commencement speaker will follow a structured review:
- Review committee: A committee chaired by the Associate Vice President for Student Life/Dean of Students will review applications.
- Final selection: The University President, in consultation with the Provost and Vice President for Student Life, will make the final decision.

Timeline Summary
The timeline for the nomination and selection process is as follows:
- January 8, 2025: Nomination submission deadline.
- January 27, 2025: Application deadline for selected nominees.
