Flags will be lowered for James Li

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Thursday, May 8, for James Li, a professor emeritus of mechanical engineering, who died on April 14. Li joined the University faculty in 1971.

UR Essentials instructor information session

This fall, the University is introducing UR Essentials, a program that provides all required textbooks and course materials for undergraduates before the first day of class. An information session about the program will be held on Zoom from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 8. Program staff and representatives from Barnes & Noble will be on hand to discuss the program and answer questions instructors may have about the program in advance of the May 15 materials submission deadline. Register via email by 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, to receive the Zoom link.

Health Bites webinar on social connection

Join UR Medicine EAPWell-U, and Kimberly Van Orden, an associate professor of psychiatry and principal investigator with the HOPE Lab, to learn about Connection Planning—a brief, evidence-informed strategy to reduce or prevent loneliness. Register here to attend on Tuesday, May 13, at noon.

Wilmot Shared Resources lunch and learn on Seahorse XF

The Cytometry Shared Resource team will spotlight Seahorse XF in this lunch and learn seminar on Tuesday, May 13, in the School of Medicine and Dentistry Large Auditorium (2-6424). All students, technicians, postdocs, and PIs are encouraged to attend. Lunch will be provided. Learn more and register to attend.

Goergen Institute AI T-shirt design competition

On Friday, September 19, the Goergen Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence will host a 10th anniversary celebration as part of Meliora Weekend. All Goergen Institute friends, students, and alumni are invited to join; details and registration forthcoming.

In honor of the anniversary, the institute is hosting an AI T-shirt design competition for current Rochester students and Goergen Institute alumni. The winner of the competition will receive a $500 prize, and their design will be used for the 10th anniversary commemorative T-shirts. To enter, submit your design here by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, May 16. Only one submission is allowed per entrant. Read through all the instructions and disclaimers before submitting.

Summer youth softball camp

The coaching staff and players from the University’s softball team will host a three-day softball camp for ages 8–18 from July 29 to 31, from 9 a.m. to  3 p.m. daily. Lunch and T-shirts are included with participation. Camp will include daily sessions of pitching, catching, infield, outfield, hitting, baserunning, agility, and live competition.
