2011 marks the Mane Attraction's 15th year of business at the University of Rochester. The Mane Attraction II is a hair, nail, and tanning salon located on the third floor of Wilson Commons. The services provided at the salon offer students, faculty, and staff a convenient and affordable alternative to off-campus beauty shops.
"Students love that they can use their University flexible spending accounts to get their hair cut," said Anne Marie Algier, associate dean of students at the University. "This is a huge benefit which is widely utilized at the salon."
Kristie Biehler and Nichole Schoonmaker run the day-to-day business on campus and are New York State licensed cosmetologists. Haircuts and washes are only a small feature of the many hair services offered to both men and women at the Mane Attraction II. Highlights, perms, up dos, and shaving are provided, as well. The salon also offers the acrylic nail application, both full sets and fills, which is a new addition to the nail services. Facial waxing also is available.
The Mane Attraction II also has participated in the Colleges Against Cancer's Shave to Save event for the past three years. Held to raise money for the American Cancer Society, the event also supports chemotherapy patients. Students, both male and female, raise money by shaving their heads or cutting their hair, and the Mane Attraction II donates their services for free.
"We've worked with them since the event started a few years ago," said Molly Zimmerman, a senior at the University of Rochester and a member of Colleges Against Cancer. "They are always extremely helpful and their positive attitudes help to make the event fun and lighthearted."
In honor of the salon's 15th anniversary, patrons may receive five dollars off hair color changes, highlights, and perms during March. The Mane Attraction II is open Monday through Saturday and walk-ins are welcome. For hours and pricing, visit: http://sa.rochester.edu/sao/mane_attraction/.
