Dean of Arts & Sciences Gloria Culver has announced the creation of a Humanities Center, which will support multidisciplinary engagement around literature, history, the arts, and philosophies of cultures past and present. Culver and interim director of the new center Joan Shelley Rubin have chosen “Humanities at the Crossroads: Charting Our Future” as the center’s theme for its first year. Faculty and students will organize research projects, seminars and symposia around the theme.

Euakarn (Som) Liengtiraphan ’17, a student employee from University Communications visited College Town with seniors Joseph Bailey and Christopher Marsh, and offers a sample of what College Town has to offer Rochester students.

River Campus music major Ethan Lipkind ’15 performs a song for Kara DioGuardi. The successful songwriter, American Idol judge, and music executive conducted a songwriting workshop at the Eastman School of Music.

Gloria Culver has been appointed dean of the School of Arts & Sciences, effective immediately. Culver has been serving as interim dean since July 1, 2014.

Students affiliated with Active Minds, a national organization dedicated to mental health awareness, planted 1,100 pinwheels– representing the number of college students lost to suicide each year– in Wilson Quad. “Send Silence Packing”, as the traveling exhibition is called, is a program designed to raise awareness about the incidence and impact of suicide, connect students to needed mental health resources, and inspire action for suicide prevention.

Evans and Susanna Lam have committed $1 million to the River Campus Libraries to establish the Evans and Susanna Lam Library Revitalization Fund. The fund will support the modernization of the patron services area in Rush Rhees Library, which will be named Evans Lam Square.

Jesse T. Moore Jr., a professor emeritus of history and prominent scholar of American and African-American history who helped focus the University’s efforts to bring diversity to its academic programs and community, died Saturday, April 18, at the age of 82, after a battle with cancer.

James Hansen, adjunct professor at the Earth Institute at Columbia University and former director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies will speak on Monday, April 20, in Hutchison Hall.

Eastman School of Music alumnus Jeff Beal ’85 leads a small group coaching session with jazz students Eugene Bisdikian, Chase Ellison, and Billy Petito in Howard Hansen Hall. Beal, the Emmy-winning composer of the House of Cards score, is visiting Eastman to host master classes and an evening of film music.

Michael Neidig, an assistant professor of chemistry, has been recognized as a “rising star” by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Neidig is one of 126 U.S. and Canadian researchers selected as recipients of Sloan Research Fellowships for 2015.
