Rochester graduates Lendsey Achudi ’14 and Jonathan Johnson ’14 have been named 2014 Humanity in Action (HIA) fellows and will study the protection of the rights of minorities in Poland and Germany, respectively.

Amanda Chen ’14 has been selected to participate in the 2014-15 Whitaker International Fellows program. The program sends young biomedical engineers anywhere outside the United States or Canada to pursue academic or scientific research, Chen will use her fellowship to pursue a master’s degree at the University of Cambridge in the UK.

The new VISTA Collaboratory, located in the Carlson Science and Engineering Library, completes a high performance supercomputing system on a massive scale and is one of only a handful of similar labs in the U.S. The display consists of an array of 24 monitors, is 20 feet wide and 8 feet tall, and has a resolution approaching that of IMAX theaters.

Robert Boyd, professor of optics and physics and a pioneer in the field of nonlinear optical physics, will be awarded an honorary doctor of science degree this summer by the University of Glasgow in Scotland.

Adam Pacheck has been elected to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team for Men’s Cross Country and Track & Field in Division III. To qualify for the team, athletes must be of sophomore standing or higher and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher on a 4.00 scale.

In their 59 Days of Independence project, artist and senior lecturer Heather Layton and Brian Bailey ‘09W (PhD) invite people around the world to celebrate the independence of countries other than their own. “By recognizing someone else’s independence, you’re showing that you care about his or her well-being in the same way you care about your own,” says Layton.
