Eastman professor Paul O’Dette, alumnus Bob Ludwig win Grammys
O’Dette, professor of lute, won for Best Opera Recording, and Ludwig, alumnus and mastering engineer, took home three Grammys: Best Surround Sound Album, for his work on Beyoncé; Best Engineered Album Non-Classical, for Beck’s Morning Phase; and Album of the Year.

American Musicological Society presents Einstein Award to Melina Esse
An associate professor of musicology at the Eastman School of Music, Esse received the award honoring an article of exceptional merit published by a scholar in the early stages of his or her career for her study of female improvisation in 19th century Italian opera.

From the archives: Director Mike Nichols speaks to Class of 1972
“I don’t know much about graduations except what I’ve seen in the movies,” joked director Mike Nichols after received an honorary doctor of letters degree from the University in 1972. The award-winning director of The Graduate and many other films and plays died on Wednesday, November 19, at the age of 83. Listen to his 1972 Rochester commencement address.

Paul O’Dette, professor of lute and one of the most influential figures in the study and performance of early music, is receiving international recognition for the albums My Favorite Dowland and Charpentier: La Descente d’Orphee aux enfers; La Couronne de Fleurs.

Medical Center joins NIH network to fight arthritis, lupus
The National Institutes of Health has invited the Medical Center to join the NIH Accelerating Medicines Partnership in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus Network. Made up of 11 research groups from around the country, its aim is to develop new treatments for patients with the conditions.
