At the second meeting of the Public Safety Review Board, members reviewed and approved the University policies and procedures with regard to the issuance of firearms to Department of Public Safety officers.

Constance (Connie) Mitchell, one of Rochester history’s most influential social, civic, political and industrial activists, is being recognized for outstanding civic engagement at this year’s Susan B. Anthony Legacy Awards Celebration brunch on Feb. 4.

Richard Feldman to step down as College dean at end of academic year
Feldman, who has served as dean of the College for the past decade, is also a professor of philosophy in the School of Arts & Sciences and will be returning to the philosophy department following a year of leave in the 2017-18 academic year.

University Life Trustee Norman Leenhouts dies at age 81
As an alumnus, advisor, and supporter of the University during the past six decades, Leenhouts helped shape the success of the institution and its programs, particularly the UR Medicine Stroke program.

d.health Summit 2017 focuses on the future of aging
Underpinning this year’s theme are a selection of topics that discuss the future of medicine, technology, and healthcare policy as they relate to aging Americans. This national forum will be held at The New York Academy of Sciences, at the World Trade Center in New York City.
Mark Henderson named director of Transportation and Parking Management
As director, Henderson will lead the department responsible for overall parking and transportation management services on River Campus, the Medical Center and the Eastman School of Music.

Parking staffer honored for quick action
Maketh “Daniel” Akok of University Parking and Transportation Services, received a Department of Public Safety Challenge Coin for his actions on Dec. 26. Akok assisted URDPS officers on a multiple vehicle motor vehicle accident in the Medical Center Parking Garage after a driver drove into a visitor’s vehicle. The pregnant visitor was attempting to get out of her car at the time of impact and was pinned in between her driver-side door and the frame of her vehicle. Without hesitation, Akok and URDPS officers placed their own well-being and safety aside and worked together to lift the vehicle away to release her trapped leg. The Department of Public Safety issued Akok a Challenge Coin, which are earned by every officer in the Department after they have graduated from URDPS Officer Academy. Board of Trustees re-elects Cathy Minehan ’68
Cathy E. Minehan ’68, who served as a University of Rochester Board of Trustees member for 20 years before becoming a life trustee in May 2015, has been re-elected by the Board to serve again as a voting trustee.

University hosts Dec. 24 event for local homeless
Champions of Change’s Homeless Holiday Celebration will provide a free hot meal, clothing, haircuts and more to over 100 men and women who live under the Rundel Library in downtown Rochester.
Presidential Diversity Council holds first meeting
At this initial meeting, Seligman laid out ambitious plans for the council, including assessments and ongoing programming anticipated for faculty, students, and staff. As its initial act, the PDC voted unanimously to have Martin Luther King, Jr. Day recognized as a University holiday, commencing in 2018.
