150 high school students from across the country are gathered in Rochester this week for the National Hispanic Institute’s Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session (LDZ). Students will debate policies related to education, social inequality, and economics, among other topics.

This summer, six University of Rochester students will travel abroad through two nationally competitive scholarships, the Critical Language Scholarship and the DAAD-RISE Scholarship program. This year's scholarship recipients will study at universities in Russia and Germany.

Sophomore Leah Schwartz ’17 will spend six weeks this summer studying as a US-UK Fulbright Summer Institute participant. The program selects approximately 50 early college students from the United States and United Kingdom to participate in the summer academic and cultural exchange program.

Rochester graduates Lendsey Achudi ’14 and Jonathan Johnson ’14 have been named 2014 Humanity in Action (HIA) fellows and will study the protection of the rights of minorities in Poland and Germany, respectively.

Amanda Chen ’14 has been selected to participate in the 2014-15 Whitaker International Fellows program. The program sends young biomedical engineers anywhere outside the United States or Canada to pursue academic or scientific research, Chen will use her fellowship to pursue a master’s degree at the University of Cambridge in the UK.

Adam Pacheck has been elected to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team for Men’s Cross Country and Track & Field in Division III. To qualify for the team, athletes must be of sophomore standing or higher and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher on a 4.00 scale.

In terms of individual success, Rochester enjoyed one of its finest seasons this year. A total of 16 student-athletes earned All-America honors for their achievements, representing soccer, squash, swimming, diving, golf, rowing, and softball.

The fellowship, which is part of a federally sponsored program, provides up to three years of graduate study support for students pursing doctoral or research-based master's degrees.

A diverse group of 19 student films was presented at the University's 9th annual Gollin Film Festival on Wednesday, May 1, with the top films winning $1,200 in cash prizes.

Medical devices, a small wind turbine, a motion-sensing robot, and even a re-designed lava lamp. These are some of the engineering solutions on display at the Hajim School Design Day on Friday, May 2.

This summer Rochester students John Dawson ’13/T5’14 and Katherine Wegman ’15, will spend two months in Cape Town, South Africa, building a new community center for residents of Egoli, a squatter community on the outskirts of Cape Town.

Nearly 40 minority male high school students from the Rochester City School District will participate in the symposium, organized by the Minority Male Leadership Association.
