John Barker named to new leadership position in Arts, Sciences & Engineering

John Barker ‘09W (PhD) says his goals for higher education have always included three tenets: “access, equity, and social justice for all.” As of March 1, he is fulfilling those missions in the newly created role as senior associate dean of the faculty for Arts, Sciences & Engineering.

World rankings highlight University’s global place

The 2018 Times Higher Education World University Rankings list the University of Rochester at number 51 among U.S. universities—public or private—and number 153 among more than 1,100 researcher universities worldwide.

National search launched for new director of data science

The University of Rochester has launched a national search for a new director of its Goergen Institute for Data Science. Henry Kautz is stepping down after leading the institute since its founding in 2014.

University announces tuition, financial aid increases for 2018-19

Tuition for University of Rochester undergraduates in the College will increase by 3.7 percent to $52,974 for the 2018-19 academic year, and financial aid will rise 5.7 percent over the current year to $137 million. Room and board will increase 3.5 percent to $15,862. Tuition for the Eastman School of Music will also increase by 3.7 percent to $53,340.

New award recognizes teaching and research mentorship

Frederick Lewis ’68 (PhD) was surrounded by mentors while working toward his doctorate in organic chemistry. A new award funded by Lewis and his wife Susan Rice Lewis will recognize faculty who excel as both teachers and mentors.

New high-tech hub for entrepreneurship debuts in Sibley Square

Now in its new space on the sixth floor of historic Sibley Square, NextCorps (formerly High Tech Rochester) will serve as one of the cornerstones of the revitalization of downtown Rochester. NextCorps is an affiliate of the University of Rochester and the region’s only state- and federally-designated business incubator.

In the zone at Rush Rhees Library’s iZone

iZone, a new collaborative gathering point under construction at on the first floor of Rush Rhees Library, was created in response to undergraduate students’ expressed desire for a collaborative space for innovation. It will perform triple duty as a program, a community, and a space and is slated to be open by fall 2018.
