Black History Month 2023

This February, the University of Rochester marks Black History Month with various events, including discussions, exhibitions, and performances. Check the University Events Calendar regularly throughout the month for the latest programs and activities.
Black History Month event highlights
- The Department of Black Studies and the Frederick Douglass Institute for African and African-American Studies will host several events this month. On Thursday, February 2, Philip V. McHarris will lead a talk on “Policed: Spatial Criminalization and Public Housing in New York City,” and on Monday, February 6, Paul Jose López Oro will discuss the “Maroon Geographies of Indigenous Blackness: Garifuna New Yorkers.”
- The URMC 21-day challenge begins on Thursday, February 2. The monthlong series features daily prompts, reflections, engaging presentations, and debrief discussions to energize participants about equity work.
- The Black Students’ Union at the Eastman School of Music will present its Black History Month showcase recital on Thursday, February 9. The recital promotes and celebrates music by Black composers and Eastman students.
- The Memorial Art Gallery is hosting its annual Black History Month Celebration Day on Sunday, February 19. The event, open to all Rochester families and community members, features performances, music, storytelling, art, fashion, and more. The suggested family donation is $5. Registration is required.
- The International Theatre Program will present The African Company Presents Richard III from February 23 through March 4. Vernice Miller, a performer, producer, educator, and activist who hails from Jamaica, will direct the drama, which is based on true events.
- The Simon Black Student Alliance is hosting several events throughout February. Attend a discussion on “Responsible Marketing: Brands and DEI,” on Thursday, February 2, or cheer the teams on during the inaugural Black Owned Business Case Competition.
