Donald Hall, the University of Rochester’s Robert L. and Mary L. Sproull Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Sciences and Engineering, has announced that he will be joining Binghamton University (SUNY Binghamton) as Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, effective July 1, 2022. He will remain at the University of Rochester until June 30.

In making the announcement to his “fabulous” team, Hall said, “It has been a tremendous pleasure working with all of you. I leave here with a heavy heart but also with the knowledge that AS&E is in the hands of great administrators and staff.”

As dean, Hall led a number of important initiatives in AS&E, including “Imagining the Future of AS&E,” with specific emphasis on Intrinsic Inclusivity, Distinctive Education, and Exceptional Research. His “Difficult Conversations” speakers’ series has brought together thousands of University students, staff, and faculty, along with community members, to engage in thought-provoking conversations with an array of recognized leaders. He has also spearheaded new initiatives that have improved admissions and financial aid policies, and that have led to new online and international pre-college programs. He commented, “The University of Rochester is a world leader in transformative research and education. It has been an honor to be a part of this dynamic institution.”

“Donald has been a visionary leader for AS&E,” said Interim Provost Sarah Peyre. “In addition, he was instrumental in the University’s overall response to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for our undergraduates. We celebrate his appointment at Binghamton University and wish him every success.”

Future plans for the deanship will be made in the coming months by President Sarah Mangelsdorf, Interim Provost Peyre, and Provost-designate David Figlio. “Donald has been very generous in agreeing to remain at the University until the close of the academic year,” said Peyre. “This gives us the gift of time to thoughtfully consider next steps.”
