Five graduate students from the University of Rochester Medical Center and one from the School of Arts and Sciences have been offered National Institutes of Health F31 fellowship grants to support their health-related research.

The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) has recognized the University of Rochester’s Horticulture and Grounds staff with a national award for exceptional grounds maintenance.

Autumn’s Harvest Farm is one of the University’s newest local food suppliers, providing sustainable pork, beef, and eggs to campus dining centers. The growth of local and responsible food purchasing has led to recent awards for University Dining Services.

The University of Rochester astrophysicist recently received the American Physical Society’s 2020 Joseph A. Burton Forum Award and his latest book Light of the Stars was awarded the 2019 Phi Beta Kappa Award for Science.

Three University educators are being recognized as the recipients of the 2019 Goergen Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching: Matthew BaileyShea, Ryan Prendergast, and Katherine Schaefer.

“We should give students the input and tools to be able to produce knowledge on their own,” says Ryan Prendergast, an associate professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures.

“It’s amazing what I learn just from reading my students’ papers,” says Katherine Schaefer, an associate professor of instruction in the Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program.

“Teaching students how to teach music theory is especially fun,” says Matthew BaileyShea, an associate professor at the University’s Eastman School of Music and in the College’s Department of Music.

Jessica Goodman and Alec Salminen each took first place at two recent University of Rochester research competitions that limited contestants to brief presentations geared toward general audiences.

The annual award recognizes undergraduate students who excelled academically and in leadership roles during their first year at the College.
