University Trustee and Board Chairman Emeritus G. Robert Witmer Jr. ’59—noted jurist, distinguished alumnus, longtime servant of the University and the Greater Rochester community, and a man known affectionately as “Mr. Rochester”—is being remembered this week as one of the institution’s most significant and beloved leaders. Witmer died Sunday evening, August 18.

At its May meeting, the University’s Board of Trustees elected Naveen Nataraj ’97 and Kathy Waller ’80, ’83S (MBA) as new board members and recognized five individuals who were elected as life trustees.

Handler, CEO and director of the Jefferies Financial Group, has served on the Board since 2005 and will begin his term as chair immediately, succeeding Danny Wegman.

University President Richard Feldman said, “Joe Abrams and Liz Bruno are already engaged with important efforts at the University, and I look forward to working more closely with them in the future.”

The University recognized the outstanding contributions of three distinguished individuals during Meliora Weekend: musicians Chick Corea and Steve Gadd ’68E, and Hugo F. Sonnenschein ’61, one of the nation’s most distinguished academic leaders.

Today, the Special Committee overseeing the independent investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and retaliation at the University of Rochester announced a series of measures intended to confirm the rigor, fairness and transparency of the investigative process.

The Board of Trustees has appointed a Special Committee to oversee an independent, comprehensive investigation into all matters involving the EEOC Complaint. 

“Each newly elected member has a deep affinity for the University and its mission,” said Board Chair Danny Wegman. “We are very fortunate to have them serve.”
