On December 3, 1847, the first issue of the North Star newspaper was published in the city of Rochester. One hundred and seventy one years later, the city again celebrated abolitionist, activist, author, and orator Frederick Douglass in an evening of words and song at Rochester’s Hochstein Hall. The Prophet of Freedom event include a performance by Eastman School of Music student Jonathan Rhodes ’20 of a song written for Douglass in 1847 that had not been performed in 100 years.

They major in optical engineering and minor in Italian. Or work toward dual degrees in music and computer science. Or pursue two minors while majoring in audio and music engineering. Meet the graduating seniors from the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences honored for pursuing dual degrees or minors in the humanities.

Traditionally, arts and cultural institutions don’t have funding for student internships, which leaves interested students having to choose between paying jobs and exploring career options.

Rochester ethnomusicologist Jennifer Kyker has embarked on a research project focused on the musical life of one of her earliest mbira teachers, renowned performer of the Zimbabwean mbira, Sekuru Tute Chigamba.

Rochester Fringe Festival is one of the fastest growing in the United States, with performances from many University students, faculty, and staff. Six of those performers share what makes Fringe special.

“I want to win competitions, perform in famous halls under major conductors, and show the world my heart through my craft,” says first-year viola performance major Adrain Jackson. “I want to be great.”

The symposium includes several sessions and panels designed to build contemporary leadership skills with a global perspective.

Andrew Ainslie has led strategic curriculum and recruitment changes at Simon School, and expanded the undergraduate business program. Jamal Rossi is recognized for increased faculty recruitment, building partnerships and spurring innovation in Eastman’s music programs.

For the Michigan native graduating with dual degrees from the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Eastman School of Music, Ivan Suminski found himself in an enviable dilemma.

Two recent Rochester graduates are among 92 students chosen worldwide to be Gates Cambridge Scholars—the most prestigious international postgraduate scholarship offered by the University of Cambridge.
