College freshmen meet Rochester on #WilsonDay14

The incoming freshmen class will discover what Rochester has to offer and explore the many ways to get involved in their surrounding neighborhood during the 26th annual Wilson Day on Thursday, Aug. 28. Over 1,350 students will garden, paint, meet with senior citizens, help organize school supplies, and learn more about their new community.

Rochester top college destination for African leadership students

The University ranks as the number one destination for graduates of the African Leadership Academy (ALA), a selective college preparatory program in South Africa. Last week the University hosted the academy’s 4th annual indaba, meaning “gathering” in Zulu – the largest conference in North America for students who have graduated from ALA.

Photo essay: Looking forward to Move-in Day by looking back

Each August, the University of Rochester prepares for Move-in Day, when the incoming freshman class arrives to begin their time as undergraduates. With the help of family, friends, and University volunteers, more than 1,000 new students move into five residence halls on the River Campus and the downtown Eastman Campus. Beginning on Aug. 25, more than 1,300 members of the Class of 2018 will arrive. Here’s a look back to Move-in Days of yesteryear.

University of Rochester welcomes Class of 2018

More than 1,300 freshmen from more than 75 countries will move in to the River Campus and Eastman School of Music beginning Monday, Aug. 25. Move-in Day is an event featuring a cappella singing groups, the University Pep Band, and other student groups entertaining and welcoming the new class to their new home in Rochester.

Beyond Rochester’s ’64 riots

July 24 marks the 50th anniversary of the race riots that rocked the city of Rochester in the summer of 1964. A new exhibit in Rush Rhees Library, “Beyond Rochester’s ’64 Riots: 50 Years Seeking to Make One City Out of Two,” showcases a balance of the past and the present-day, in search of a fresh perspective on ways to move our community forward.

University of Rochester is on the Fringe

The University is a sponsor and major participant in the 2014 First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival, taking place Sept. 18–27 in Rochester’s East End. Students, faculty, and alumni will perform in more than 40 shows during the 10-day city arts fest.

Mock trial concludes Youth Legislative Session for Latino students

150 high school students from across the country are gathered in Rochester this week for the National Hispanic Institute’s Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session (LDZ). Students will debate policies related to education, social inequality, and economics, among other topics.

Photon camp gives high school students exposure to optics
